First Rasmussen Poll of NH Primary

The first Rasmussen Reports poll of the New Hampshire Presidential Primary finds New York Senator Hillary Clinton comfortably on top with a 17-percentage point lead over her nearest competitor. Clinton attracts 38% of the vote while Illinois Senator Barack Obama is a distant second at 21%.

The telephone survey of 428 Likely Voters found former North Carolina Senator John Edwards in third place with 10% of the vote. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson is close on his heels at 9%. Delaware Senator Joe Biden earns 3% support. Connecticut Senator Chris Dodd and Ohio Congressman Dennis Kucinich each attract 2% support while former Alaska Senator Mike Gravel is favored by less than half a percent of likely voters.

In a broad sense, the results are very similar to national polling on the Democratic race. Edwards is a bit weaker in New Hampshire than nationally while Richardson is a bit stronger. Results for the Republican primary will be released on Tuesday.

Clinton enjoys an advantage in national polling among women, but the margin is even bigger in New Hampshire. The former First Lady attracts support from 47% of women in New Hampshire. All of the other candidates combined attract just 40% support from women.

In terms of the overall match-up, Clinton's support is virtually identical among both moderate and liberal voters. Obama does better among liberals, but still trails Clinton by double digits among that segment of the electorate.

Just a friendly reminder, this was dairied yesterday.

Hillary: We will finally have a president who doesn't mind pulling over and asking for directions. Am I right, ladies?

Clinton is rolling (none / 0)

She has her campaign moving forward at a nice clip and is picking up speed.  Getting on the ground in Iowa in a big way this weekend is just another sure of sign of this.

New Hampshire is looking good, as is Nevada and Florida.   I don't think Iowa is out of reach for either, although I think it will be very very tough to beat Edwards there.

Who is looking at Richardson and seeing that he is presidential material? He looks like the politician version of Jim Belushi...

No offense intended, but I think Bill Richardson's elegant wife should give him a little bit of lovingly-delivered coaching about his manners during the debates.

God knows he's got a kickass resume.

CLINTON:ANOTHER STATEMENT ON PARDON (none / 0)

"I believe that presidential pardon authority is available to any president, and almost all president's have exercised it," Clinton said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "This (the Libby decision) was clearly an effort to protect the White House. ... There isn't any doubt now, what we know is that Libby was carrying out the implicit or explicit wishes of the vice president, or maybe the president as well, in the further effort to stifle dissent."

I wonder where those complaining are now, especially when I haven't heard much from Obama.

She also commented on it at her rally last night.

The Clinton Campaign will take on these republicans anyday.

Re: CLINTON:ANOTHER STATEMENT ON PARDON (none / 0)

can you do a diary on this one? Looks like Hillary is reading talkingpointsmemo and her framing of this issue is exactly from the angle that's been suggested on talkingpoints.

Re: First Rasmussen Poll of NH Primary (none / 0)

Great numbers for Hillary.  She really needs to surge in Iowa so we can wrap this thing up and start thinking about the general election.

Re: First Rasmussen Poll of NH Primary (none / 0)

reasonwarrior, you're in denial.  Hillary (spelled with two Ls by the way - remember the supposed Edmund Hillary connection?)is a lonngg way from "wrapping this up."  I'm not ready for the Clinton-fetishist smugness just yet.  Who knows, maybe Chelsea will run next time, so we won't have to have you step outside your dynastic comfort zone. Obama's gonna win this, Clark will be his running mate, the Clinton thing will run out of steam and the party will hopefully move on from celebrity worship and careerism and focus on real progressive politics and real change.
